Tuscany sometimes seems to be virtually carpeted in vines. Besides the well-known Chianti and Brunello, there is Carmignano (a Sangiovese-Cabernet blend), Vino Nobile di Montepulciano; out toward the coast you'll find Morellino di Scansano (Sangiovese) and Bolgheri (best exemplified by Bordeaux-lookalikes Sassicaia and Ornellaia). Then there's a whole slew of what have come to be called "Super Tuscans" (a term coined in English to describe any Tuscan red wine that doesn't adhere to traditional blending laws for the region, and carrying no official weight with the Italian wine authorities), as well as dry whites such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano and a dessert wine called Vin Santo that can be relatively dry (almost Sherry-like in this case) or quite sweet.

Sweet red berries, mocha, flowers, new leather and spices are some of the many notes that are layered in this sumptuous, totally beautiful wine. The 2009 stands out for its silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. This is one of those wines that will probably enjoy a long drinking window. There is little question the ability to blend grape varieties was a huge help in this vintage. In my opinion, that is the main reason Ornellaia is a slightly more complete wine than Masseto in 2009. In one of my blind tastings, the 2009 made a very eloquent case for itself as the wine of the vintage. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. In 2009 winemaker Axel Heinz used the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever in Ornellaia and gave the wine less time in oak, both with the goal of preserving as much freshness as possible. The year started off very warm but by August evening temperatures had moderated, leaving the fruit with a stunning combination of ripeness, perfume, acidity and tannin. The wine is simply glorious, that’s all there is to it. Layers of dark fruit meld into smoke, leather, violets, menthol, earthiness and tar as this profound wine opens up in the glass. The creamy, silky finish lasts an eternity, as waves of fruit caress the tannins with breathtaking elegance. Everything is in the right place in this magical Sassicaia. This is one for the ages. Complex nose melds red cherry, blackcurrant, minerals, dried herbs and a delicate oaky vanillin nuance; the fruit aromas show an almost roasted quality without going over the top. Sweet, concentrated and nicely fresh, with an impression of strong extract and a hint of exotic fruits to the flavors of ripe red and dark berries, chocolate, plum and wild herbs. The candied fruit quality carries through on the long, smooth finish, where there's a trace of heat and hints of menthol and minerals. A very successful Sassicaia but, in my notebook, just a little below the lofty heights of the 2001 or 2004. But given the quality of this wine, that's quibbling. (Sep/Oct 2010)"

18.5/20 points Neal Martin (The World of Fine Wine): "Deeper in color than the '07, there is certainly more ripeness and roundness on the nose, with black olive, licorice, and a touch of umeboshi, all with exceptional definition. The palate is full-bodied, with ripe black-plum fruit interlaced with licorice and a touch of spice. Very harmonious, very focused, with wonderful delineation toward the fresh, vibrant finish, which shows immense structure and brio. I have a feeling that this may close up in a couple of years, but this is certainly a stunning Sassicaia. (Issue #30; 2010)"
