WHWC staff notes: "I'll be honest, the reason this 100% Barbera caught my eye was because it has a unique label, which upon closer inspection contained a sailing ship. I choose to believe that it is most certainly a pirate ship. As a double bonus it is also Demeter-certified biodynamic, so how could I NOT try it? I'm so glad I did. From the Monferrato region of Piedmont near Asti, this tiny 3-hectares family estate is the epitome of an 'everyday' value wine that is versatile enough to go with any dish, Italian or otherwise. A true ruby red color lets you know that this wine will be medium-bodied without the worry of over-extraction. Pure, soft mixed-berry dried fruit, smooth tannins and alcohol are interwoven with lovely elements of Piedmont terroir and Barbera typicity: vanilla, leather, herbs, cherries and taut acidity. There is a lot going on here, but yet it is so easy to drink. You won't be disappointed with this rustic little over-achiever." -Casey Carmichael

89 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "[$19 list] Damilano’s 2009 Barbera d’Asti is a big, powerful wine loaded with dark fruit, minerals and spices, showing terrific balance in a full-bodied, rewarding style. This is the second release from a recently acquired parcel in Asti, where Barbera is capable of reaching greater heights than just about anywhere else. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. (Aug 2010)"
88 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$19 list] This youthful expression of Barbera comes forth with ripe and raw aromas of black fruit, plum, prune and wild berries. You really feel the freshness of the fruit here and this wine would pair perfectly with pasta or pizza. (Dec 2010)"

88 points Wine Spectator: "Vegetal and earthy aroma follow through to a black cherry flavor emerging in the mouth. Seems unsettled now, with a slightly bitter finish. This is concentrated, so give it a few months to sort itself out. Best after 2013. (2/29/12)"
87 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "[$20 list] The 2010 Barbera d’Asti emerges from the glass with dark berries, leather, licorice and scorched earth. It shows good length and character, but not quite the personality of the very finest years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. (Aug 2011)"

88 points Wine Spectator: "[$30 list] A rich, ripe style, offering sweet black cherry and bitter almond flavors. The texture starts out smooth, giving way to a pleasantly astringent finish. Drink now through 2016. 600 cases imported. (5/31/13)"
Bastianich & Lynch (Vino Italiano Buying Guide): "Some of the longest-lived and most elegant wines in the Langhe... the Falletto vineyard, in Serralunga, is the source of Barolo, barbera, and dolcetto... Bruno Giacosa is a traditionalist, producing fragrant yet austere wines aged for long periods in large casks before release. Buy and hold!"
Robert Parker: "Perhaps the greatest compliment I could confer on Bruno Giacosa is that there are no wines in the world I buy without tasting first, except for those of one producer--the Professor of Nebbiolo."

Sourced from the same vineyard that produces the legendary Giacosa Barolo Falletto, this bottling is widely considered one of Italy's top Barberas. The Falletto di Serralunga vineyard is southwest-facing, and its soil, a blend of clay and sand, enables the Barbera grapes to produce full and complex wine. Giacosa could easily make more money by grafting these vines over to Nebbiolo, but the fact that he doesn't speaks volumes to how "Il Maestro" regards the wine.

A hugely seductive nose of black cherry liqueur, cinnamon and dried fruits, and citrus zest. Beautifully silky on the palate, but with impressive structure, too. Ripe fruit and crisp acidity balnces harmoniously on the impressively long finish. A magnificent Barbera!
Not yet reviewed; Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate) on the 2008 vintage: "The 2008 Barbera d’Alba San Lorenzo shows the effects of a challenging growing season in which the fruit struggled to ripen. In 2008, Mascarello harvested her Barbera after the Nebbiolo, which is quite unusual. The San Lorenzo shows good juiciness and minerality but less body and harmony than the best vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015."

90 points Wine Spectator: "This is pure, with blackberry and black cherry flavors that run deep. Coats the palate lightly, with a glycerine feel, offset by bright acidity and a touch of tannins that add a pleasant astringency on the finish. Drink now through 2014. (1/31/13)"
88 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "Prunotto’s 2011 Barbera d’Asti Fiulot is another big, opulent wine bursting with fruit. The Fiulot isn’t the last word in complexity, but it is a terrific wine for the money. There is plenty of intensity and opulence in the glass, along with the underlying nervousness of Asti to balance things out. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. (Oct 2012)"
