The Rhône Valley is really two very different regions, a northern sector, starting just south of Lyon, and a southern segment beginning around Montélimar but effectively consisting of a sweep of vineyards and winegrowing villages forming an arc around the area immediately to the north of Avignon. White wine is produced here also, with Condrieu (made from Viognier) and Hermitage Blanc (Marsanne and Roussanne) leading the pack in terms of quality and cachet.
