Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue practice noninterventionist winemaking techniques, and their pure, crisp wines are an unadulterated reflection of each of their terroirs. This wine reveals a rich nose of tropical fruit with toasted notes that follows in the mouth with surprisingly vibrant structure, excellent balance and very good to excellent length.

This top cuvée from the brothers Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue drinks like grand cru Burgundy from the Côte d'Or, but at a fraction of the price. We recently popped one of these at a dinner party and haven't stopped recommending it since. Jean-Pierre and Michel are third generation proprietors at this property right in the heart of the Mâconnais. Robert Parker notes that "Their wines...are among the top half-dozen wines produced in the region... they are favorites at [many] important restaurants in France." The rich nose of tropical fruit, floral and lemon hints with toasted notes leads to surprisingly vibrant structure in the mouth, excellent balance and very good length. We appreciate the fresh-coated roundness and richness that brings complexity to this great wine of gastronomy. An ideal companion to Fettuccini Alfredo, roasted chicken with French fries, or foie gras.

Importer notes: "The village of La Roche Vineuse (meaning vinous rock), appropriately named for the bevy of limestone found in the vineyards, is located in the heart of the Mâconnais, and captures its true 'terroir'. This lovely wine balances richness with minerality; the mid-palate and length are classic Burgundy. There are less expensive Mâcons; there may be greater Mâcons, but we feel there is no finer Mâcon for the money."
Producer notes: "100% Chardonnay from 25-year-old vines. Straw gold yellow. White floral and acadia aromas. In the mouth, dry and mineral. Food pairing: We suggest this wine as a pre-dinner drink or with poultry, risotto, fish, escargots and goat's cheese."

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Flavors are followed by intense crisp citrus fruit. This is a lively style, very fresh with a delicious tang of orange zest, light caramel and vibrant acidity. Alcohol 13%. (Nov 2010)"
88 points Wine Spectator: "[$25 list] An appealing white, this has grip and intensity, offering apple and spice, though there appears to be very little new oak, if any. This shows fine structure and a crisp finish. Best from 2011 through 2015. 100 cases imported. (2010)"

87 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): "A generously if not dominantly wooded nose reflects notes of toast and vanilla along with overtly ripe white and yellow orchard fruit aromas. There is good richness and plenty of mid-palate volume and sap to the medium-bodied flavors that possess acceptable though not special depth and length. This is carrying quite a bit of wood and given how rich the wine is, the palate impression lacks the necessary verve to really carry it off. To be fair, and clear, there are no faults though I feel compelled to point out that the style will most please those who enjoy 'in your face' whites. Drink: now. (Sep 2012)"
Producer notes: "Evening Land's 2010 Etoile Pouilly-Fuissé is sourced from the region's most beautiful, ancient vineyards. Beauregard is a warmer terroir producing rich, round wines. The blending of Beauregard fruit with that of the cool terroir of Vergisson produces a wine that is acidic, racy, and pointed. The vineyards of the Macon are often overlooked and its fruit is all-too-often sold off for use in the big blends of the region."

From the Mâcon region of Burgundy, this wine is green-gold in color with a very complex nose expressing the fruit but also a minerality. It is both round and elegant, imparting subtle notes of white and exotic fruits.
WHWC Staff Notes: "Yes, it's Chardonnay. Now that really isn't so terribly off the beaten path. Agreed. But when was the last time you drank a bottle of Viré-Clessé? I thought so. With that, I'll proceed with recommending this splendid little white Burgundy which hails from the central Mâcon, just due north of the famous Solutré. Wines from this terroir may lack the scent of Meursault or the style of fine Chablis, but assuredly this little number delivers enough richness and sumptuousness to warrant the tariff and then some. I drank this the other night while watching my NY Rangers fight for their playoff lives. The wine paired tremendously well with my feast of local Armenian slow-roasted chicken with garlic sauce (Sevan not Zankou). Sexy aromas of orange blossom, ripe pear, and a floral top-note entice the drinker. More tactile in the mouth than the nose suggests, with strong minerality giving the wine some grip. A brisk and refreshing Chardonnay. And for what it's worth, the wine is certified ECOCERT which means that it is 100% organic, EU style. They've been farming organically since 2006 because they love their land." - Kaj Stromer

'Outstanding Top value' and 89-91 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): "Residual fermentation aromas dominate the nose but the seductively textured flavors are clean and bright. There is solid mid-palate concentration to the citrusy, complex, balanced and impressively persistent finish. This could be potentially outstanding for what it is. Drink: 2014+. (Sep 2012)"
88-90 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2011 Clos de la Crochette was quite a bit more closed from its recent bottling than the three previous wines. The reticent nose offers up a fine mix of apple, peach, fruit blossoms, a touch of citrus peel and a gentle base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite primary, with a more fruit-driven personality, a fine core, sound acids and good length and grip on the youthful and still slightly monolithic finish. This will need a year in the cellar to really start to blossom and should be lovely. 2014-2018+. (Nov/Dec 2012)"

Considered one of the finest winemakers in France, Dominique Lafon produces coveted white Burgundies from some of the greatest vineyards in the Cote de Beaune. Always hungry for new challenges, he purchased 14 hectares of vines in the Mâconnais in 1999. He believes strongly in the potential of the region, but feels that too few vignerons have attempted to realize that potential. Thus, in the very same spirit he runs his renowned Meursault property, Dominique utilizes biodynamic viticulture, intense soil rejuvenation, tight yield control, and rigorous green harvesting to produce some of the most complex, vibrant and impressive wines the region has ever seen.

92+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2011 Mâcon Viré-Clessé from Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon is also outstanding, offering up a deep, ripe and very transparent bouquet of apple, pear, lovely minerality, orange blossoms and a touch of citrus zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and very intensely flavored, with very good mid-palate depth, fine cut and a long, young and seamless finish. Fine juice as well. 2014-2020+. (Nov/Dec 2012)"
'Outstanding Top value' and 89-92 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): "A deft touch of wood frames a distinctly ripe but very fresh mélange of white orchard fruit, honey, orange peel and citrus blossom. There is a lovely sense of tension to the supple and round medium weight flavors that possess good detail and plenty of punch on the dry, clean, linear and explosive finish. This is also potentially outstanding. Drink: 2013+. (Sep 2012)"

Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 91 points by Wine & Spirits: "Performing at the level of a fine Côte d'Or village wine, this Mâcon is a lithe white with rich layers of flavor. There's tension in the structure and complexity in the dry pineapple and grapefruit pith fruitiness. The wine continues to improve with air, as it will with several years of bottle age."

This family-owned domaine has been producing some of the finest 'Grand Vin de Terroir' wines for five generations. Marie-Pierre and Oliver Larochette completed work on their new cellar in 1999. Tasting Notes: Clean and round with mouth-filling grapefruit, lemon-lime notes and a subtle mineral backdrop. Pair with: seafood, shellfish and olive oil based pastas, fresh Chèvre and triple cream cheeses.
Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 90 points by Robert Parker: "If this exemplifies what we are going to see from the 2009 vintage in the Maconnais and further north in the Cote d’Or, consumers are in for a treat. Larochette-Manciat’s 2009 exhibits plenty of steely freshness as well as ripe nectarine and honeyed melon notes presented in a fruity, medium-bodied style. It is a beautiful white combining power with elegance. Enjoy it over the next 1-2 years."

A blend of wines from the communes of Charnay-lès-Mâcon and Farges-lès-Mâcon, areas extending south to the north of Mâcon. This combination gives both fine aromas and balance, reflecting all the characteristic expression of Chardonnay. Tasting notes: Brilliant gold. The nose is a fresh and floral blend of fresh fruit (citrus) aromas. On the palate, soft and round, with pleasant lemony flavors and good length.

Producer notes: "Pale-gold in color, this St.-Véran offers intense, complex aromas of flowers and white fruits (lime and peach). Generous on the palate, this wine is round and balanced with a long finish. Its tangy mineral impression confers freshness, in line with its regional typicity."
