'Top 50 Spirits 2009', Superb (96-100)/Highest Recommendation, Wine Enthusiast: "Opening bouquet offers sedate fragrances of dried flowers and malted barley; aeration stimulates marginally bigger aromas of dried yellow fruit (baked banana), toasty oak barrel and stillvigorous spirit. Palate entry is succulent, honeyed and luscious; midpalate tastes of dates, figs, S’mores, cocoa butter, nougat and dark fudge. Finishes oily, buttery, honey-sweet and focused. (Dec 2009)"

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light and versatile, although at over 100 proof 'natural cask strength,' this golden spirit could stand some dilution, whether via a dose of ice water or mixing into a cocktail. Perfumy floral-honey nose, with flavors of vanilla lemon, oak, and a hint of smoke on the finish. (12/15/11)"
Wine Spectator: "Fruity. A flavor safari from nose to finish. Opens up with honey, sour apple and cream, then brings on apple, orange Creamsicle, maple, toast and brown sugar in the mouth. The neverending finish is the crowd-pleaser here, with anise and candy notes and a remarkable ethereal quality. Cries out for water at this strength. Non-chill filtered. 54.2 abv. (2/28/11)"

'Best New Spirits 2012,' Wine & Spirits: "The 1995 vintage of the Glenrothes Scotch Whisky is simply so pleasant that long after the snifter is empty, I keep going back to the glass just to smell. Take a whiff and you get plenty of butterscotch and toffee, wet earth, heather and spices. Distilled in the Speyside region of Scotland and aged in a combination of 35 percent first-fill Sherry casks, the rest in second-fill Bourbon and Sherry casks, it's packed with dried fruit and yeasty, malty flavors. Perfect to sip around the fireplace on a cold evening with friends. (Winter 2012)"
First fill American Sherry oak casks, first fill Spanish Sherry oak casks,a nd the rest from refill casks give the characteristic Glenrothes balance and complexity of flavors of red fruits, butterscotch, citrus and spice. At the recent Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2011, the Vintage 1995 received 92/100 points classifying it as Excellent and Highly Recommended by a highly qualified panel of judges.

The 1988 Vintage is a fantastic reminder of how beautifully The Glenrothes ripens from vibrant, zesty youth to rich, full-bodied maturity. This vintage has benefited from more than two decades maturing in a combination of Spanish and American oak. The combination gives it a combination of citrus notes, a delicious cooked orange flavor and plenty of fruit, as well.

Jim Murray's Whisky Bible: "Honeyed breakfast cereal with a touch of vanilla. The light feints delivery gives away its distillation style, but it recovers super-fast with a volley of intense brown sugars and salivating barley grtist. The feints serve up the oils which take the spices and honey a very long way. A German-style single malt from a distillery located in one of the most beautiful areas of barley growing I have ever seen on the west coast of the US. The garden that is the Skagit Valley, farmed for is sumptuous boysenberries and crisp cherries, never looked better than when the sun is glinting off the ripened-golden barley crop. This malt reflects the area rather well. (2013)"

93 points and 'Top 50 Spirits 2011,' Wine Enthusiast: "Elegant, light and pretty. This amber spirit has a light, briny vanilla scent and a silky feel. A veil of smoke rises through the Scotch (but fades out fast), leaving behind a sweet nutty, vanilla finish. (12/15/11)"
Michael Jackson (The Malt Whisky Companion): "The greatest all-rounder in the world of malt whisky." Rich amber glow & distinctive taste of smokiness and heather honey, peat. Finish is long and delicious. Double Gold Winner - San Francisco World Spirits Competition - 2005.

The evening glow on the Old Man of Hoy, a towering rock that guards western Orkney, offers a perfect reflection of the color and taste. The traditional Highland Park complexity is apparent, a rich, full nose with peat and fruit, but more enhanced than its 12-year-old brother.

"Best Spirit in the World" in the 2009 Spirit Journal listing of the world's best 115 distilled spirits. All the hallmarks of Orkney are here -- the smokiness, the peat, the heather-honey. All complemented by a glorious richness and spiciness cultivated by longer cask maturation. Also named to the Spirit Journal's "Hall of Fame." (Jun 2011)"
'Best Whisky for 2010' Spirit Journal: "Still my favorite Scotch whisky of the era. As many times as I taste this legend over the course of the year, HP 18 never fails to show me something new and different, a nuance that I hadn't detected previously. This classic continues to be a stupendous work of distilling art that, I believe, is one of the greatest beverage alcohol liquids ever produced and is assuredly the finest of the last 20 years. Graceful on the one hand; mighty and fathomless on the other. Delectably salty/peaty/maritime on the one hand; intensely malty on the other. If I could only select but one Scotch whisky, HP 18 would remain that very special singular choice. A masterpiece to savor many times before one dies. (Jun 2010)"
Classic (96-100)/Highest Recommendation, Wine Enthusiast: "Opening aromas are of sea breeze, cigar smoke, oak and malted barley; air contact releases light caramel, fudge, cocoa bean, burnt candle wick and heather. Entry is the most complex of any whisky; midpalate soars on oak, spirit and grain tastes. The greatest distilled spirit of this generation. Buy whatever you can find. Best Buy."
Wine Spectator: "[$115 list] Fruity. This would be very good if only for its blatant sweet and fruity flavors, yet it roams into the realm of the exceptional when you begin to notice the spice, toffee and leather on the nose. Fruity on the palate, this allows you to distinguish a tangerine character, then notes of Christmas cake and nuts. The finish suddenly goes spicy with anise, adding more nuts as it plays out for several minutes. (2/28/11)"
'Best of the Best Malts,' 10/10 points Quarterly Review of Wines: "Gold hue, honey, floral sweet, nutty flavors; sits well on palate; long, lovely oak and spicy finish. (Autumn 2011)"

90-95 points Superb/Highly Recommended, Wine Enthusiast: "Not much aroma initially; following aeration time succulent notes of sweet grain, sweet oak, marzipan and nuts appear. Entry is firm, focused and moderately sweet and grainy; midpalate is intensely honeyed, featuring plump tastes of marshmallow, dark caramel, fudge, cake frosting and wood. Finishes sweet and full-bodied. Very good and straightforward. (12/15/09)"
***Recommended, F. Paul Pacult Spirit Journal: "Deep amber color; impeccable purity. The most subdued aroma of the three but still displays genuine depth in the forms of breakfast cereal, malted milk balls and wet hay; further air contact brings out touches of nougat, chestnut puree, egg cream and light caramel. Entry flavors are chewy/textured, doughy, fruity and caramel-like; mid-palate is succulent in its fruitiness and yet malty/cereal-like at the same time. Ends on a marzipan/praline note that is medium sweet and pleasant... (Mar 2012)"

****Highly Recommended, Spirit Journal: "Attractive, bright, amber/old gold hue; impeccable purity. Lovely first aromas include deep-roasted grain, toasty breakfast cereals, sea salt and oak plank; seven more minutes of air contact release dried apricot and walnut notes that serve to round off the already splendid bouquet. Entry is moderately oily (though not creamy), nutty, malty and toffee bittersweet; midpalate is medium long, significantly drier than the entry, oaky, gently smoky and sophisticated in its integration. Since the early 1990s I've scored this whisky three stars, but over time as I've come to enjoy JW Black more socially and as a teaching tool, I've come to appreciate it as a four star blend, hence the upgrade. Along with Chivas Regal 12 and Dewar's 12, JW Black is a benchmark Scotch whisky 12 year old expression. (Dec 2011)"

****Highly Recommended, F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal): "Marginally darker, more topaz in color than the regular JW Black; flawless clarity. Peatier, a smidgen sweeter and more charcoal-like and slightly smokier in the initial whiffs than the standard JW Black; this aroma is noticeably fatter and more oak barrel driven than the more angular, grainy and maritime-influenced regular JW Black. Entry is medium-smoky, astringent and dry, oaky and delightfully round; midpalate displays a measure of soft peatiness and olive brine that's appealing but there are also dried fruit, candied almond and mint aspects that work in harmony with the texture. Concludes in a sweet, fruity pipe tobacco manner. Markedly different from standard JW Black, which is leaner and drier. (Dec 2011)"
Cocktail Enthusiast: "Double Black starts with the Black Label template, and from there, it adds peatier malts and malts aged in heavily charred oak barrels -- the result being a smokier dram than the original. And while the Black Label is aged for 12 years, Johnnie Walker Double Black carries no age statement. On the nose, Double Black offers aromas of peat smoke, oak and dried fruits. Take a sip and notice more of that smoke, plus some pleasant tropical fruit notes, vanilla and spice. It’s quite drinkable, with an easy-going mouthfeel and a dry finish, but it’s a bit heavy-handed on the oak, with lots of char coming through. (10/3/11)"

****Highly Recommended, F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal): "The deep bronze color is eye-catching; excellent purity. The opening aroma is rife with scents of soy sauce, olive brine, peat, and honey; seven more minutes unleash a whole other universe of mature aroma, one that features oloroso sherry, brewer's yeast, bread dough, barley malt, and cigar smoke; a memorable nosing experience. The entire flavor phase, from palate entry through midpalate, defines 'classy Islay,' that lovely maritime location that magically includes the innate intense peatiness of Islay malts and the masterly employment of oak barrels; a perfect marriage. Concludes sweetly, without sacrificing the tangy, astringent peatiness that is inherent. An elegant malt that artfully navigates the waters between Ardbeg and Laphroaig on one side and Bowmore and Caol Ila on the other. Gorgeous."
Wine Spectator: "Peaty. A fascinating turn on an essentially peaty Islay. The smoke offers a toasty element as it coyly introduces itself on the nose, with hard candy as a partner. The peat comes on with salt spray in the mouth, but once again gets quite candy sweet, with a bread dough core. On the finish the smoke fairly disappears for a while as you enjoy the delicate sweetness, masking the next wave of toast at the outer limits. (2/28/11)"

The process of barreling in small "quarter casks" allows the maturing spirit thirty percent more contact with wood. The spirit is first matured in the more usual ex-Maker's Mark bourbon barrels and transferred to quarter casks, making it double cask-matured. Toasted coconut melds with that typicity of Islay peat and lends an orange liqueur soul to its prolonged finish.

****Highly Recommended, F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal): "The deep amber/ochre color with bronze core highlights is a benchmark for sherry cask aged malts; perfect purity. Right from the start, the aroma is sweetish, winey, and oaky; with further time in the glass, the aroma expands to include marzipan, treacle, molasses, honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon, and cocoa butter; an amazing experience. The palate entry is textured, unabashedly sweet, creamy, and assertive; by the midpalate phase the flavor goes intensely nutty, buttery and bacon fat-like, with the beginnings of rancio. Mountains of concentration and sherry/honey flavors make this a very stylistic malt that to some newbee admirers might seem old-fashioned. One of Speyside Scotland's standard bearer 12 year olds."
9+/10 points Quarterly Review of Wines: "Nice weight, delicious, stylish and smooth finish. (Autumn 2011)"

Exclusively matured in selected sherry oak from Jerez, Spain. Light mahogany in color. Aromas of dried fruits and ginger, with a hint of citrus, vanilla and cinnamon. On the palate: rich dried fruits, with spice, clove, orange and wood smoke. Full and lingering finish, with dried fruits and sweet toffee, ginger and a hint of wood smoke.
*****Highest Recommendation, F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal): "One of the greatest single malt appearances of all time; brilliant copper/orange color; impeccable purity. The first sniffs detect deep notes of toasted chestnut, brown butter, salted butter, and marzipan; secondary passes after an additional eight minutes of air contact bring out the oloroso Sherry in all its dried fruit/raisin/fig glory, but also oak, treacle, chocolate fudge, and chocolate covered cherries. Entry is fathomlessly deep, rich without being unctuous, sweet without being cloying, and as elegant as any other 18 year old malt whisky around. An enduring classic and a benchmark for robust Speysides. (Sep 2009)"
Named to the Spirit Journal's '140 Best Five Star Spirits in the World for 2011 (#45)': "Upon retasting this serious malt again recently, I was reminded why it is an international standard for malt whisky. It's that ideal age (18); the sherry oak makes it winey/pruny-raisiny and plump and dried fruit sweet; and jeez, I just love the daylights out of it because it's so wonderfully decadent. This will always be in my personal pantheon of malt whisky gods. Scoop-it-out-with-a-spoon luscious and the perfect complement to the more nimble Fine Oak series. (Jun 2011)"
Wine Spectator: "Fruity. An object lesson in what Sherry does to whisky. A telltale nuttiness appears right on the nose, before spice and fruit join in on the palate, with a sort of chewing gum quality. The nutty notes return in earnest on the meaty finish. (2/28/11)"
10/10 points Quarterly Review of Wines: "Rich, big, explosive flavors, firm body, assertive, vanilla nuances, long finish, lovely. (Autumn 2011)"
